Using Your Diet to Keep Your Teeth White

Posted .

If you have looked in the mirror recently and thought that your grin looked a little dim, you may be thinking about whitening your teeth. There are plenty of mouthwashes and toothpastes that contain whitening agents, and of course, is no shortage of other products designed to make your smile sparkle. But the best whitening treatment that you can receive comes from our dentist, Dr. Raymond Maddox.

Once your treatment is over, what can you do to keep your smile looking good? Of course, you should brush and floss your teeth every day and see your dentist for your regular appointments. And the list of foods you should avoid is pretty long. But is there anything you can eat that will help keep your teeth white? Yes, there is.

Dairy is important, Milk, yogurt and similar products are high in calcium, which is good for your teeth and can help keep them white. In fact, hard cheese will actually scrub the surface of your teeth and remove food particles and stains. Saliva is important. It keeps your mouth hydrated, and your teeth clean. So crunchy foods, especially those with a high water content are great for white teeth. Celery is a good choice, especially since it is very low in calories. Carrots, apples and any crunchy fruits or vegetables will stimulate saliva production to keep your teeth clean and white. Speaking of fruit, pineapple should be on the menu if you want to keep that white smile. It contains bromelain, which not only whitens teeth, but fights plaque as well.
